swing king

dressed for christmas day, 2010.

swing king

Ronin’s first birthday was exciting if not for him at least for his parents. Our little baby is now a toddler. How the 12 months flew by. Mom and Dad had planned a day at Turtleback Zoo since Ronin gets a kick out of seeing dogs and cats. Well, the Turtleback Zoo has changed alot since Mommy went there last. It was nicely designed and landscaped and it now had a train ride and carousel.

The first exhibit we saw was the reptile room. Unfortunately there was not too much movement in the exhibits and so there was not so much excitement for Ronin. We then took pictures of Ronin, Mommy and Daddy in the local photo booth. Daddy was the only one looking at the camera. Mommy and Ronin were too busy looking at themselves on the monitor.

It was a hot and humid day and so many of the animals were conserving their energy by resting in the shade as we all wished we could. Ronin did love watching the penguins (who appeared to be the coolest animals in the zoo while they were diving in their pool) and the bears that kept pacing back and forth in front of the display window. There was also the peacock that was wandering freely around the zoo. Ronin wanted to touch it while it was watching itself in the reflection of a bumper of a maintenance truck and posing as if to strike an opponent.

We also took Ronin on one of Mommy’s favorite rides, the Carousel. Ronin was placed on a stationary giraffe unlike the other animals that could go up and down. Daddy was standing with him the whole time. Of course, Mommy got a kick out of the ride more than the birthday boy. Ronin just stared with a blank face while the carousel went around and around. That was okay. It won’t be long when Ronin will be jumping up and down to go on all those vomit inducing rides while Mommy and Daddy wait it out at the exit.

When the clouds dissipated, so did our protection from the sun as well as our energy levels. Mommy and Daddy decided to cut the day short since Ronin appeared tired and Mommy and Daddy were getting burnt. Before we left, Mommy and Daddy made the stop at the gift stop to make sure we got Ronin a momento of the day: a stuffed Rockhopper Penguin.

We then celebrated his birthday at Lola’s and Lolo Pop’s house where Ronin took a nap before eating cake and playing with his gifts. Ronin was fascinated with the candles on his cake and did not understand the concept of blowing out the candles so Mommy and Daddy took care of that. Ronin got a cordless phone from Lolo and Lola, a Duplo yellow bus, Little Tykes sports center, and chatterbox telephone.

Overall, it was just another day for Ronin but it was a landmark moment for his parents and his grandparents. Our little guys is 1!!!

Adorable

Ronin is at the age where everything he does is adorable. Here are some of the adorable things he has been doing and is currently doing.

Ronin Is Adorable When:

He crosses his feet when he sits.

He spins on his butt in the kitchen like a spinning top.

He babbles to himself when he first wakes up in the morning for a good 15 – 20 minutes.

He reads a story to himself as he flips through a book upside.

He stands by his exersaucer and dances to the music.

He pushes the button on his exersaucer to change the music that he doesn’t like.

He smiles in his sleep when you pick him up to rock him back to sleep after he wakes up crying.

He knocks on the door of the bathroom when his daddy is in there.

He gets excited seeing any doll and then grabs it and bites its nose.

He gets excited when he sees a real dog or a dog on TV.

He loves his Tommy Dog and presses its heart to change the music to something he likes.

He is just being himself!

first birthday

some photos are up from the birthday visit to the turtle back zoo.

a longer entry will be added soon to talk about the day at the zoo and afterwards, and some reflection on the past 12 months.

first steps?

unassisted? quite possibly. stay tuned….

Butt scooter

At last entry, Ronin wasn’t quite mobile. Well, he still isn’t crawling yet but he has gotten quite efficient at scooting on his butt. Last time I mentioned he was scooting a little bit or was just turning around on his butt like a top on its axle. Now he can scoot from one room to another in no time flat. It is not a graceful but it is quite funny. Check out the video here.

He is also getting around a lot with the help of Mommy and Daddy. He is not one to sit down in one place for long. Often he is motioning or whining to one of us to help him walk around. He enjoys the mobility. He often tires us out walking from one end of the apartment to the other. Daddy often tires out more easily since he has to hunch over to assist Ronin in walking. This is one time Mommy can be happy that she is so short.

It won’t be long when he will be walking on his own and running around. Then we will be tired out from just chasing after him. We will be soon looking at these butt scooting days with envy.

Why is that Mommy feels she has to write a blog after every doctor’s visit? Well, Mommy guesses it is because she can report some stats. Stats show growth and progress and that is what Ronin is doing: growing and progressing. He now weighs 18.8 lbs and is 26 inches tall with a 46 cm head.

He is growing and progressing and he also wants to start going. Unfortunately, for him (but fortuntately, for mommy and daddy) he can’t crawl yet. He is not one to be left on his tummy. Mommy guesses she didn’t let Ronin have enough tummy time when he was younger because once he is on his tummy he isn’t on his tummy for too long. He will just roll over on his back and then he is usually crying out for Mommy or Daddy to pick him up and sit him up.

He is starting to scoot on his butt if he wants to get to something. Yet, if someone is around he is more likely to cry to have someone get that something for him. He is a bit spoiled in that Mommy and Daddy can’t let him cry too long before they hand it to him.

He is also spoiled in the fact that Mommy and Daddy will carry him around wherever he wants to go. He definitely vocalizes where he wants to go by crying out and sticking his hand to whatever direction he wants to lead you. If you are not going in the right direction he will start squeezing his legs or kicking his legs in protest. Mommy and Daddy are getting a workout just carrying him around from room to room and object to object. The little man gets bored quickly, trust me.

He will walk though, when assisted. He will walk when Mommy and Daddy are holding his hands. His Daddy just recently saw him take a few steps with his musical walker.

musical walker

Mommy was jealous that she wasn’t there to see it because when Daddy tried to recreate the moment, Ronin just let the musical walker lead him while his legs didn’t follow. He would just be leaning forward at the waist holding on to the moving walker and laughing while it pulls him to a more horizontal position. It was a sight to see. It was proof that Ronin will not let the “not crawling” thing slow him down. Soon enough he will be on the move and running right after him will be Mommy and Daddy.
